Classic llamas: fine soft short wool with lots of coarse guard hairs, best brush every second year when they naturally molt, this way you get just the fine wool and not the hairs.

Woolly llamas: dense long wool (10cm ish) with no guard hairs,or fine guard hairs, needs shearing as they normally don't molt. once a year or every 2nd year

Silky llama: wool is very fine and fluffy like candy floss, with a few fine guard hairs. best sheared once a year or every 2nd year

Suri llama: wool hangs in locks, uni fiber (not wool) in fact hair (like mohair). best sheared every 2nd year

Note: wool has micro hooks (or over lapping scales) on each strand of fiber the more hooks (or smaller scales) there is the scratchier the jumper and the better it felts (as the hooks lock together). also the bigger the scale the more lustre you usually get.
Hair: is a smooth strand of fiber (no hooks) like mohair it is softer next to the skin even through the fiber diameter may be larger.

What weight of wool would you expect to get from a classic llama fleece? Do you lose much because of the guard hairs?

Please don't spit - this is a nice forum!

llama wool is very light so its like weighing feathers, normally your looking at 500g classic, wool llama up to 3/5kg, silky 1kg or so, and suri 5kg ish (their wool/hair is heavier)
